| The Black & Decker Corporation was established in 1910 by S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker.
Widely known for having invented the portable electric drill and patenting the pistol grip, trigger switch, hand-held power drill, Black & Decker is a publicly owned corporation whose common stock began trading on the NYSE beginning in 1936.
With corporate headquarters located in Towson, Maryland, the 1920’s saw the establishment of its first foreign subsidiaries, the Black & Decker Manufacturing Company, Ltd., in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
The corporation has since acquired a number of other corporations including the Emhart Corporation, MITE Corporation, Planning Research Corporation, and United Shoe Machinery. |

Black & Decker operates 46 manufacturing and assembly facilities, employing approximately 25,000 people, in each of the following countries: Germany, Italy, England, Mexico, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Japan, and the United States.
Being, primarily, producers of power tools and accessories, home improvement and hardware, the Black & Decker Corporation operates vendors and retailers worldwide and its product line is marketed under many different well-known brand names including plumbing products by Price Pfister, security hardware from Kwikset, household standards such as Dustbuster and Scumbuster, and industry-ideal hand-held rechargeable drills by DeWalt.
Other brand names include Porter Cable/Delta Machinery, Baldwin, Weiser Lock, Emhart Teknologies, Oldham Blades, and K2 Commercial Hardware.
A market giant, Black & Decker has long been seen as a leader in product development, and has a number of industry awards and achievements to show for its reputation:
- 1967 — Queen’s Award to Industry for outstanding achievement in increasing exports (United Kingdom)
- 1968 — Oscar des Commercia for overall contributions to the Italian domestic economy
- 1988 — Medal of Professional Excellence for world-class purchasing operations and expertise by Purchasing Magazine
- 1989 — Inducted by NASA into the USA Space Foundation’s Space Technology Hall of Fame for contributions to the Gemini and Apollo programs and achievements regarding cordless power tools
- 1993 — Vendor of the Year award from Wal-Mart
- Black & Decker has taken a leading role in the development of the current industry standard for battery chargers, known as EPA Energy Star®
Black & Decker’s approach to product design ensures that environmental issues are addressed and applicable regulations are met, while minimizing adverse impacts upon the environment.
“Life-Cycle Thinking” is used in the design process to provide insight as to where environmental improvements may be implemented.
Design optimization assessments, such as finite element analysis, are used to maximize product life and decrease amount of material used in the product, resulting in a tougher, lighter tool for the customer.
This process utilizes assessment activities in the evaluation of a product throughout its lifecycle, from product specification and design, through use by a customer and recycling/reconditioning considerations.
Furthermore, always keeping the customer in mind, Black & Decker products are designed with replaceable parts to extend the tools term of usability.
